About Open Source

Open source is the bench where we check the claim against the code. Products here publish their source for others to read, run and change, and that gives a reviewer something concrete to test: can you install it, does the documentation match what actually happens, and is the project alive or abandoned. Each listing is a first-impression lab, with pros on one side and cons on the other.

This page lists the products and businesses in the category and its subcategories, with filters to narrow the bench. Listings appear newest first by default, and you can sort by community votes, which can never be bought. Pick the subcategory that matches how the thing will be used, then compare licence terms, setup effort and upkeep before you commit.

Open Source: questions answered

What belongs in the Open Source category?
Products and businesses whose source code is published for others to inspect, run or modify. That covers finished apps, code you build with, tools you host yourself and open AI work. A closed product with a free tier does not belong here.
How do I choose between self-hosted tools and open source apps?
Ask who runs it. Open source apps are aimed at people who simply want to use the software. Self-hosted tools expect you to run them on your own server and look after updates, backups and access. If setup is part of the deal, choose self-hosted.
How do I get my open source project listed?
Go to /submit and paste your website address. An AI drafts the profile from that site, and you check and edit every field before anything goes live. A free listing joins a queue of about 6-8 weeks, and a paid launch is also available.
Can a project appear in more than one category?
Every listing has a single main category, chosen when it is submitted and included free. A paid upgrade adds up to 3 more categories for $5, which suits a project that is both a library and an AI model, for example.
What should I check when comparing open source options?
Start with the licence and whether it fits your use. Then look for recent activity in the repository, documentation that matches the real install, and a clear way to report problems. Our pros and cons columns note what we hit when we tried each one.
